Freeland is a loosely organized collection of outlaws and pirates, that adopted a “constitution” of sorts, partly to lend themselves legitimacy/solidarity in the eyes of the greater powers and partly to set order to their constant infighting. The number one value of the ragtag nation is personal liberty and independence, which could be expected given its composition. The only “national action” ever taken was to organize a militia to repel a Gastonian expedition fifty years ago. The port of Free City is the only official settlement of Freeland, but the Pirate Isles are riddled with port towns and hideaways to the many pirate bands that vie for dominance. Because any force attacking from the east would have to cross The Barrens, navigate a narrow pass through the mountains, and hack its way through a dense jungle, Freeland has been largely ignored by its giant neighbor. Freeland also has a pact of nonaggression with Sesset, which helps matters.
